How Do I Claim an Apostille Legally?

If you need to use Pakistani documents abroad in Hague Convention countries, you must get them Apostilled. An Apostille is a special certification that verifies the authenticity of your documents, making them legally valid overseas. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to claim an Apostille in Pakistan.

Step 1: Determine Which Documents Need Apostille

Common documents requiring an Apostille include:

  • Educational Certificates (degrees, diplomas, transcripts)

  • Personal Documents (copyright, marriage certificates, police clearance)

  • Commercial Documents (company registrations, power of attorney, contracts)

Step 2: Get Documents Attested by Relevant Authorities

Before applying for an Apostille, your documents must be attested by the appropriate departments:

  • Educational Documents: Attested by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) or relevant board/university.

  • Personal Documents: Attested by the Interior Ministry or NADRA.

  • Commercial Documents: Attested by the Chamber of Commerce or Registrar of Companies.

Step 3: Schedule an Apostille Appointment Online

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) handles Apostille services. You can book an appointment online via the MOFA website to avoid long queues. Walk-ins are also accepted, but appointments are faster.

Step 4: Submit Documents for Apostille

Visit the MOFA Authentication Office (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, or other designated centers) with:

  • Original documents

  • Copies of documents

  • CNIC copy

  • Fee payment receipt

Step 5: Pay the Apostille Fee

The fee varies depending on the document type (usually between PKR 15,000 to PKR 30,000). Payment can be made via bank challan or online.

Step 6: Collect Your Apostilled Documents

Processing usually takes 1-3 working days. Once ready, collect your documents with the Apostille Stamp attached.

Important Notes:

  • Some countries may require additional legalization even after Apostille.

  • Always verify requirements with the destination country’s embassy.

  • Private agencies can assist with the process for a fee.

By following these steps, you can successfully claim an Apostille in Pakistan and ensure your documents are recognized internationally.
